A postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Food Science and Technology at the University of California, Davis. The research funded by the NIH will focus on dietary interventions that support gut microbial function and immune system in the first 1000 days from pre-pregnancy to toddler-hood.
The successful candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers from different departments at UC Davis including chemistry, microbiology, nutrition, food science, medicine and bioinformatics under the direction of Dr. Jennifer Smilowitz.
Major Tasks for the Postdoctoral Position
- The candidate will co-design and execute clinical trials in the Davis and Sacramento areas aimed to understand the impact of dietary interventions on the gut microbiome and gut and immune function.
- The candidate will analyze specimens for immune and metabolic markers and analyze data on gut function.
- Additionally, the candidate will conduct community-related research to test and implement educational materials on lactation in underserved communities.
The candidate will have excellent writing and oral communication skills and have the potential to write grants and high-quality scientific papers.
Contingent upon mutual agreement, satisfactory performance and the availability of funds, your appointment may be renewed. It is within the university’s sole discretion to appoint, reappoint, or not reappoint a postdoctoral scholar. The salary and benefits will be provided based on UC Davis policy for the postdoctoral scholar based on their experience.
This position is eligible for J-1 visa sponsorship. This position is not eligible for H1-B sponsorship.

Eligibility Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application).
Interested applicants will have
- A Ph.D in Nutrition, Food Science, Physiology, Human Development or a related field
- Proven track record of productivity with at least one first author publication in a peer-reviewed journal
- Experience in designing and executing human studies
- Proficiency in conducting power calculations, parametric, non-parametric statistical analyses including data reduction techniques
- General laboratory experience including performing ELISAs or similar assays.
Preferred qualifications
- Microsoft Office (i.e. Excel, PowerPoint, and Word), Graphpad Prism or R or equivalent
- Developing dietary and community interventions and related research studies in pregnancy, lactation, infancy and toddler-hood, and food systems, community-engaged health interventions
- Work well in a team and be motivated to independently pursue and drive their project
