Funded MSc Opportunity in the Ecology of Species Range Margins at the Department of Biology, Lakehead University is currently open for application.
The Ectotherm Ecology and Evolution lab, led by Dr. Adam Algar, is recruiting an additional MSc student for September 2022. The student will have the opportunity to develop their own specific research questions and hypotheses but will work, broadly, on the ecology of amphibians (especially gray treefrogs) at their northern range margins. In particular, there is an opportunity to use bioacoustic methods to investigate the link between changing microclimates, calling behaviour, and distributional limits.
The student will be based at Lakehead’s Thunder Bay campus (www.lakeheadu.ca), on the shores of Lake Superior and on the doorstep of Canada’s vast boreal forest with its abundant wildlife. Rapidly changing environments in this region, coupled with the presence of many species’ northern range edges, make it an exciting region for ecological research.
Potential applicants can learn more about the lab’s research at https://adamalgar.github.io and on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ecto.eco.evo/. Please contact Dr. Adam Algar at [email protected] with any informal enquiries.
The lab is committed to improving equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in science. You can find the lab’s EDI statement under the ‘Inclusion’ tab at https://adamalgar.github.io.
Specific experience in geographical ecology, bioacoustics or herpetology is not necessary for this position. Additionally, field work, while an option, is not a requirement. The most important qualification is a curiosity about the natural world and a desire to learn more about the process of science and ecological discovery. Discussions/interviews about the position will take place over Zoom, but other platforms can be accommodated so please ask if there’s a format that works better for you.
Applications should include an unofficial transcript, CV (résumé), and a cover letter to Dr. Adam Algar at [email protected]. Given that time is short, I will begin reviewing applications immediately.
