The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics (DBB) hosts several prominent research groups, whose interests span across cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, theory and neuroscience, and cross-disciplinary collaborations across these areas. Several groups, many of them global leaders in their fields, study biological membranes and their protein components.

Neurochemistry is currently the focus of strategic investments at DBB, including recruitments at the group leader level. Our facilities are primarily located within the Arrhenius laboratories at Stockholm University’s Frescati campus, together with other departments focussing on chemistry and biology. There is also a strong association with the Science for Life Laboratory, where several DBB groups are situated. Over 200 staff, including ca. 80 graduate students, are currently working at DBB.

PhD Positions in Biochemistry: Project description

Your studies in Biochemistry will be in the project: “Nuclear membrane proteins in chromatin organization, cell differentiation and cancer“.

The cell nucleus is surrounded by a nuclear membrane containing a large number of unique membrane proteins. The repertoire of nuclear membrane proteins varies during development and differentiation of different tissues.

Nuclear membrane proteins play important roles in the organization of chromatin and control of gene expression. Disorganized chromatin is associated with aging and human diseases, such as cancer.

Aim of the project

The aim of the project is to identify and investigate nuclear membrane proteins involved in chromatin organization, using a combination of modern recombinant DNA techniques, cell culture, advanced microscopy and quantitative image analysis.

Therefore, we are seeking candidates with a strong background in biochemistry. Priority will be given to applicants with prior experience in the above techniques (please include documentation).

Qualification requirements

  • In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
  • In order to meet the specific entry requirements, for acceptance in the Biochemistry program the applicant must have passed courses within the first and second cycles of at least 120 credits in Biochemistry/Life Science, including at least 15 credits Biochemistry at the second cycle level and a Degree Project (thesis) also in Biochemistry of 30 credits.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection process

The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to successfully complete the program. Important criteria when assessing this capacity are;
